Douglas MacKinnon asks an interesting question in his Townhall article, Can You Save the Dream that Was America?
"Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security." - from The Declaration of Independence
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." - Second Amendment of the United States Contstitution, ratified December 15, 1791 (emphasis and link mine)

Is America presently the country prescribed in the Constitution? No.
ReplyDeleteIs this good or bad? Yes that is bad.
If it is bad, is there any hope? If good, is there any danger? Yes there is always hope.
If something can be done, what? Yes something can be done. As to the ‘what’; that is the difficult part. Pray for starters. ‘If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray then I will hear from heaven and I will heal their land.’
How long do we have before it is too late? (When must something be done?) To say you can know when it is too late would be to presume that you knew when God was done being patient with the world and when Christ will return for the final judgment.
Is what might be done legal? Is it right? I’m not sure what you mean by that. I suppose there might come a time when it is made illegal and we will have to choose to obey God rather than man; but as of right now; yes it is legal. Again I’m not sure what you mean but I would say yes; yes it is right.
What opposition might be faced? Unknown though most likely intense. “Those who will live godly in this life will be persecuted.” Just remember ‘…but be of good cheer for I have overcome the world.’
Does God intend to do anything? Yes, I have faith that God will act.
Has God rescued nations in the past? Yes.
Has God chosen not to rescue nations in the past? Also yes.
Are His decisions seemingly arbitrary, or do they go by rule? Ha, yes to both; seemingly arbitrary (sometimes), going by rule (all the time).
I believe that we will see a great revival in our nation in our lifetime. I know that is seemingly impossible. In fact humanly speaking it IS impossible. But all things are possible with God. I also struggle a lot with feeling helpless and hopeless when it comes to the condition of our nation. But when I start to feel that way Psalm 27:13,14 and Psalm 37 (as wall as many other passages) are a great help.

America is not the world.
ReplyDeleteAmerica - even Christians - are not addressed in the "if My people pray" verse. What's more, America's Christians are not humble.
Prayer is not all that God asks of his humble little people. Sometimes He wants us to use our minds to take action.
Finally, God judges the wicked, even wicked nations. The "when it is too late" question refers to when the deterioration has gone so far that America cannot fix itself by democratic/ republican/ constitutional processes.
