Why do we say "thunder and lightning" when lightning happens first?

On a highly technical note: The actual event of lightening and thunder may occur at the same time as they both mark the same event... However, one form of energy travels faster than the other so we experience the event in two parts.
Cause and effect: lightning causes thunder.
